Vette(s): 1981 - 59 Beige over Cinnebar leather. Edlebrock top end, 2200 stall w/shift kit, 3:55s, Mufflex maniback exhaust, nice stereo, 16 in AREs w/BFGs

I just sent my carb out for a well deserved rebuild.  The shop is the best service in the area and have the "rep" you like to see..  The mechanic told me I should seriously look into updating the "chip".  He thinks its a 30hp pickup and the car will be crisp.  Heres my questions

* Any of you do this?

* Do I need or should I get a chip for the trans?  Is it the same chip?

* If this is worth while do any you guys have a part reccomendation and where to get it?

As always, THANK YOU!

Vette(s): 1975 C3 Red, T-Tops, Black Interior. All I need is time and money! Getting there!

The only computer control in your transmission is the lockup torque converter.  And it's controlled by the same computer, so no other chip is possible or needed.   To modify the trans, you would need a shift kit in the trans itself.

Some of the aftermarket performance chips work very well.  Most will fail an emission test. But you are now at 25 years old, and over 25 years does not need any emission equipment or test in most states.

Just ask a lot of questions about the chip.  Some give more performance, but hurt fuel economy, or cause driveability problems.  Most of the time they do perform a bit better.

But in your car it's going to be limited.  The only control possible is timing changes, and a bit more fuel enrichment at certain throttle openings.  It won't make a difference at Wide Open Throttle for fuel, but may help timing, and some performance.  It may be a good thing, just don't expect too much.

The flip side is, it's not likely to hurt anything, and you can always put the old one back in if you wish.

Talk to Summit Racing and places like that.

Yeah, the "chip/prom" will make a small difference. You may notice it, you may not. A lot of variables. The 'puter will control the timing of the lock-up converter as far as the trans, but that's all.
Ken's right, tho; you won't see any diff.(engine-wise) at wot at all, but it may feel a little quicker taking off. Is it worth it?

I've got a "Hypertech" chip in my '85, and there's a definite difference in low speed/cruising performance.

Thank You Guy's,

I too drive the L81, love it to pieces, I keep trying to milk all she is worth out of her, but this was the original computer control and didn't limit hp.Mine is completely original so while I'm tempted to add "Comp. Cams 1.52 roller tip rockers I can't stand the thought of changing the valve covers to permit the lift.We even suffer california "smog" setbacks. Exaust recirculation pumps, cat. converters and all they can do to strangle the  power from a "power plant".Even with the 85 mph speedo, I'm in LOVE.
