I got a chance to pick up a set of aluminum valve covers off a 78 or 79. Will they fit and do I have to get special valve cover bolts?

I cant be sure but I would think they should fit. Make sure that you will have a pipe for the air cleaner and that the PCV valve will be at the same place. Im sure someone else will respond back that will definitely know but I think you'll be ok.

I'm pretty sure that they would fit , I'm not sure of the bolts.

Bolt pattern should be the same as mentioned check PCV oil and breather holes to match up with your originals and check the height to make sure they are not higher might be an issue near the alternator. Wiser minds will chime in

They will absolutely fit...you will need longer bolts to hold them on. Don't think there will be any interference issues with anything(alt, PS, A/C), but if there are, longer belts will solve that.
As has been mentioned, just be sure the covers have provisions for the PCV and oil fill.

I replaced my steel (1977) valve covers with the aluminum LT1 valve covers; I did have to get longer bolts. Autozone item, was not a big deal.

Vette(s): 1980 body on a 79 frame custom with a 425 hp sbc- L82 block and race ported LT1 heads, 510 lift retro roller cam and roller rockers and a 5 speed T5 trans, z07 wheels
If your heads, rocker arms and cam are stock and the covers are the finned aluminum they will fit...

I bought stainless steel, simply because I thought they would look better.
