Topic: Valve seals
in Forum: C3 Engines
I made it to Hank's place on Saturday. We put the valve seals in his 79. They really needed it. The old ones came out in hard crusty pieces.
Hank also bought some 1.6:1 rockers, and new springs. The combination should help top end a bit. At least we are hoping for that.
I did the passenger side, we went to lunch, Hank did the drivers side. All in all, a very good day. I enjoyed it.
ah yes, the valve seal job is one of my favorites. A little air, A good spring compressor, and a couple of hours and your done.
which style of seals did you use?

Ken,
Quick question.. do you need to have the cylinder your replacing seals on in the compression stroke?

We used the umbrella seals.
Ray, you don't need to worry about which stroke of the engine. Once you loosen the rockers, the valves are closed. So when you put air in the cylinder, it will hold the valves closed. The engine may turn a bit. If the engine is not on top dead center, the air pressure will push the pistion down, and the engine will turn a bit. Perfectly okay. Just be ready for it to turn.
I honestly don't remember the flat rate on the job.
I want to give Ken a big thanks. I never have worked on the inside of an engine before and it was quite a lesson. wouldn't be afraid to tackle the job again.
Ken is a walking encyclopedia of automotive knowledge. wish I would have taken notes. once again Ken, thanks.

Don't thank me. I had a good time and enjoyed myself. Hanks a great host.
Don't tell them those scars look a lot like my initials. I promised myself I would quit doing that!
