You can pull the wires at the distributor.  Or better yet, take a test light, ground it to the engine, and slide the tip of the light under the boot, between the boot and the wire, on the dist end of the wire.  Insert it far enough to kill the cylinder, but don't pierce the wire or boot.    When you pull the test light probe out, there is no damage and no voltage leakage or wet weather problems, and you run no risk of shocking yourself.    No, it won't damage the test light bulb.

But since your vehicle is not an '82 from what I can tell, then my post pretty much applies to the 82 alone. But, since we're on the subject of engine 'ticks', I'll include information I've gathered for 82's.

I also have a 'tick' from the passenger side of my '82. It appeared AFTER the exhaust was modified to true dual. Another words, I had the converter removed and straight 2 1/2" exhaust pipe welded in...then dumping into a nice pair of chromed tip Flowmasters.

Word has it that since the 'delta' input/output of the cross fire injection engine has been altered a bit, the injectors compensate by trying to find the correct settings, thus overworking a bit which is causing the injectors to increase contact with the surfaces surrounding them...thus a 'ticking' sound. It does eventually 'calm' down when warmed up and going down the highway. At 66k on the mileage, I had my doubts it was valve action. Without digging into the engine, my mechanic and I concluded it was 'injector tick'.
