Sounds like a classic case of the ignition module taking a dump, or the coil.
It's possible tho, that you are getting some not so good fuel, and it's percolating in the fuel lines(vapor lock), but...today's gas doesn't really lend itself to that...not volatile enough.
Then again...
It could be a simple matter of a derty fuel filter/sock in the tank.

It is getting fuel, but I think you are right about the ignition. I pulled the cap and the plastic was black around where the rotor makes contact with the coil. There were also some metal shaving so I'm pretty sure there was some arcing going on. I am going to round up a new rotor and see if it will go or does a guy just replace the cap, coil, and rotor at the same time and be done with it?
Like Adam said...."Ignition Module".... left side of distributor under the rotor. Two small hex bolts hold it on with wiring on both ends. I've had two bad ones within months of one another. The current one has lasted a year now.

Yep, It certainly does display the classic symptoms of a faulty module. But , I used to be able to get mine down the road a ways before it shut down

Also, to answer the other question, I think it's best to replace the cap/coil/rotor at the same time on HEI systems. Replacing the ign. module at the same time would really be an option, unless you know there is a problem with it.
