My vibration was harmonic in nature and found that the driveshaft was out of balance.  It was rebalanced and that helped alot.  Not an expensive repair either.

Check the fly wheel or torque converter to see if a weight came off. 350 motors are internally balanced, 400 motors are externally balanced. I found that out when i was a teenager and put a 350 fly wheel on a 400 motor same vibration you have at 2000 RPM then goes away.

The dent in the pan interfering with the crank was my 1st. thought also.  But the previous owner says the dent was not that bad.  It interfered with the oil pump feed pipe but didn’t go beyond that.  I haven’t ruled out the flywheel, clutch or pilot bearing yet.  The hunt continues J

I had one of the straps that connect the two parts of the pressure plate bend and cause a similar vibration. Normally the flex when you press the clutch and straighten when it's released but one had a slight bend and caused it to be a little out of balance.

Vibration update.  I went through the ignition, plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor and HEI module.  The plugs wires were in bad shape and I had 2 spark plugs that seemed a little oil fowled compared to the rest.  This took care of the vibration the started around 3000 rpm.  It’s very smooth now at highway speeds.  I still have a minor vibration that starts at 2000 RPM and goes away at 2500 RPM.  I think its flywheel or clutch related because if does it with the car parked.  The hunt continues. Smile

After more driving.  I believe it's definitely the clutch/pilot bearing.  Here’s why I think this.  When I get above 70MPH, the shifter vibrates is like the business end of a jack hammer.  If I press and release the clutch, the vibration changes.  Sometimes when I press and release the clutch, the vibration goes away all together and its smooth as silk up to 90MPH.  I would think that would rule out the universal joints.  Do you think I’m on to something?

If you get in deep enough to change the pilot bearing, I'd take the flywheel, clutch disc and plate to a machine shop and have them balanced.

At made a difference with the stuff I used to drive in the old days!

I agree with Denny. I'd probably go ahead and replace the clutch set-up, anyway.
If the pilot bushing is damaged/wallered out, check the pilot on the trans input shaft for any wear. If the shaft is worn also, there won't be much use in just installing a new bushing. A worn shaft will destroy the bushing quickly, depending on how bad it is.

You may just have a bad clutch disc that is starting to come apart, and create the shake & rattle.

Update, the main cause of my vibration was the clutch itself.  I finally had it replaced.  The disk was coming apart and had "chunks" missing...   No more gear shift jack hammer Clap..  Now that that vibration is taking care of, the other minor vibrations are now apparent.  It's a joy to drive now.  Balancing the tires and drive shaft are in order next.
