The letter will be the month, yes, but it will correspond to the month that productionstarted on that year model...in other words, "A" doesn't mean January. "A" would be whatever month that production started for that year model car, which was usually around August/September. I think the '69 year model ran into Jan of '70....can't remember, and I don't have any of my books here. Get the tag date, and we'll go from there.
No need to panic.....yet....

MY 1969 did end production in December 1969 (code letter Q).  MY 1970 started in January of 1970 so that code month would be "A", February 1970 would be code "B", etc.  See Appendix S in the "Corvette Restoration Guide 1968-1982"

btw - the body build day will most likely precede the date the car actually went down the assembly line by a couple of days.

The tag says c22.
So the car was assembled March 22rd.
The engine was built May25th.
Then got its VIN in June 1970.
(I found a ncrs judging book that tells me this.)

May 25th 1970 was a Monday.
March 22nd 1970 was a Sunday.
Weird.

I thought the cars went through faster than that.

Your thoughts?

VIN # 16185 was built on July 22nd of '70...check that trim tag again....I bet it is a G, not a C....mystery solved.

Joel, if no one has told you yet today I will be the 1st.

YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!!!

Yes its a G not a C. Had to get it wet to get the little slash to show up.
And of course your right about the VIN#.
June ended with 413829.
July ended with 417316.
Car was built on a Wed.
So this is one of the last 800 cars built before they stopped the 1970 production in July. (There were no August cars).

So Joel does this mean the LT-1's hood stripes should be 1/8th" each or 1/8" top and 1/4" bottom?
I know they changed mid year didnt they?

OK so I just found that. Last un-equal hood stripe was serial # 15889, build date July 18.

1st Known equal hood stripes are serial # 16448, build date July 24.

So do they not know if serial # 16185 was equal or not? Build date July 22nd.
How does this always happen to ME!

The factory would never have noted when something like this changed, as far as as specific VIN #. Only by research, and judging MANY cars, can we, as hobbyists, determine when one part usage stopped, and another started. You stated it yourself..."1st Known equal hood stripes". This simply means the earliest known set of stripes has been recorded, so far. It is known only because that particular car has been judged somewhere, and the particulars of the stripes has been noted.
I would bet that whatever your car has on it is correct for the time. Of course, if it(the hood) has ever been painted, then all bets are off.

All bets are off.
It has yellow stripes and yes has been repainted.
Original color of the car was grey and that would have came with white stripes. (So it would be deducted all 80 points!)Wink

The stripes are each 1/8" thats on it so maybe they copied what was there before.

I just find this stuff interesting.
