Topic: WHAT DID I WRONG ?
in Forum: C3 Engines
Yes, Jim , the Viper is WHOWWW , businez are more then GOOD , but the vette is one big problem. Ok, it's a hobby , but i'm afraid to loose my patient and go to a garage... yes, a garage ? will need to such for a "old" expert on these cars as the one i know , speedshop, only suggested the things i already tryed a hundred times.... But i give me won , don't know now anything to try further. The silver ghost still has his secret. Don't forget ( please) in your comments i bought the car in this state , the former owner didn't drive it for 6 years ( ??? ) and i only had in fact 1 testrun in witch the engine seemed good and was reving hungry. Ok , i messed it up going further "tuning" to find the limit but never had a similar running one back. And in this way one believes to find guilty parts everywhere....
Either there's a mistake in the restoration ????? but what ??? or , for example the tubular headers i installed are not OK , why ??? , but i don't feel right now to reinstall the original cast-iron to find out.... you see, everything is on question now , i dream perhaps Zora Arcus Duntov made a mistake on MY car .....
BTW.... we're up to 9 pages now and still not running right.

Now may be a good time to revisit the valve adjustment. If they are a bit too tight, the engine will flatten out at higher speedl.
Is it running smooth at low rpm, or still rough? At what speed does it start to get rough?
And, did you do a fuel Volume test. You may have enough pressure but run out of volume under high demand. We may have discussed these before, but I don't remember.

So it is clearly a ignition problem and i order tomorrow a point-less transistor ignition : i'm sure this will do it !
I think the problem was : there was a Racing Accel coil witch needs a resistor in the 12V+ line but that wasn't there. It worked because of bad ground of the painted distributor and clamp. After i removed him for the first time and cleaned surfaces for good ground .... the coil was wrong . Burning points very fast... ( i tryed 4 sets ! ) But what's clear : i didn't get it good with 1 point distributor , condensor and either the racing coil or 12V performance one. With that electronic device it's already beyond comparison and rev-hungry !
I have still in : +/- fouled plugs , points already "burned" and jetting 3 numbers higher in primary and secondary. With the transistor ignition i will install new plugs and perhaps ? back 3 jettings lower as original = bought ?
The engine now has 8° static advance , soft springs on mech advance and dwell....??? also a problem :my dwell meter seems very dependable on voltage ... :coil installed etc.. while it should mesure a angle... ?? If i put the points now with a gap of 0.016 to 0.019 my dwell meter says less than 30° ... rather 25° ??? But with transistor ignition that's a problem less !
So good news at last !

Excellent news. Ignitions can be tricky. and 25 degrees is a bit low for dwell. Some performance distributors use lower profile cams for the point lobes. They respond quicker and don't float out at hight rpms. But the gap is no longer spec. The dwell should still be 30 deg.
But as you say, the electronics will take care of that.
Good news!

Sounds like you've got it, Norbert!! I hope the electronic set-up gets you back on the road, my friend!!
btw.....Methinks Norbert is going for a forum record on posts to a single thread!!

What's the record Joel ? otherwise i can go on for a while ... perhaps switching some of the leads of the electronic box, blowing it up and coming back here with my problems ???
All by all , i had a strange experience with that ignition . Never tought that it needed so "related" components . Must admid i never had a 8 cylinder , perhaps 4 or 6 ones are not so delicate on this.
I welded the hood of my Viper so i can't be seduced to go tuning... with 10 cylinders....
The number of cylinders does not matter. All systems are like that.
Glad it's working. Sometimes the journey does not involve driving.
