When I lifted the air cleaner up on our L48, I noticed a loose vacuum hose. One end is connected at the rear base of the carb, right next to the vacuum hose that runs to the power brake booster. But for the life of me, I can't locate where the other end is supposed to connect. It's relatively short (maybe 10 inches or so in length), so the right spot can't be too far away.
Can anybody steer me in the right direction? I searched all over that area of the engine, but just couldn't find the right location.

Yepper...I agree.
The base of the air cleaner has a thermal element that controls the "flapper" door in the snorkel. It allows/blocks hot air coming from the exhaust manifold thru the tube, up to the bottom of the snorkel. It should only open when the engine is cold, to allow heated air from the manifold to enter the snorkel, and help the engine warm up quicker.
Look under the air cleaner base, and you will see where the line goes.

Hmmm...not sure I understand this connection. There's already a vacuum hose that runs from the top of the snorkle, right above that flapper valve, to what I think is called the air cleaner temperature sensor (the 'thermal element'??) inside the base of the air cleaner.
So this unconnected hose--the one I posted about--that one is supposed to run from the base of the carb to that temperature sensor as well? The length would make sense for that, it appears...

Follow the hose from the top of the snorkel to the bottom side of the air cleaner base. There are two nipples there. One for the flapper valve, and the other to the carb. If you look closely, with the air cleaner almost all the way on, you will see that the loose hose you have will fit right on to the extra nipple on the valve.
OK, Mike...photo time!

You guys...you're the best! This one had me stumped, because I've had the air cleaner off several times, but this last time I guess I must have lifted it high enough to pull the vagrant hose off the connection, without noticing I'd done that. And even though I searched the underside of the air cleaner, figuring it must have come off of there, I couldn't see the connection point.
Now it all makes sense to me, thanks to you three (and Mike's Smithsonian-like photo library added to the rescue once again!) Now I can go back and discover that well-hidden little vacuum connection on the Air Cleaner Temperature Sensor and get everything hooked back up, good and proper.
Thank you, gentlemen!
