my 76 won't start, cranking ok but won't start. getting gas to the carb. I guess the next think to do is check the spark. can anyone give me any ideas how to check for a spark, and how can I test the coil. I'm not great with cars but know how to use a volt meter

Hey Tony,
I'd start with the Ignition Module (at the base of the distributor). Take it off and most Auto Parts stores can test it for you.
The Cap and Rotor sound like good suspects, too.
Keep us posted.

before you take you distributor apart check to see if the three wire connector from the dist. and the one wire "batt" connector haven't somehow come loose on the left side of the coil where they connect, to check for spark pull any one spark plug wire from the cap out just enough to see the end, lay  it close to the wire hole and turn the starter motor over and if you see a spark jump to the wire end from the cap or hear a audioable "snap" you have spark. anips2009-07-06 22:39:12

Thanks anips I'll try testing for the spark as you suggested

like I said  just put the metal end of the wire close to the metal contact inside the cap but not touching, if you don't see the spark arc to the wire or hear the snap,  then then pull the cap and look at the rotor for corrosion on the center and end contacts, turn the cap upside down and look inside, in the middle there's a little carbon button that makes contact with the center contact on the rotor, look to see if it is broken, it sticks out about a 1/4" and its rounded on the end, it transfers spark to the rotor from the coil, also look for corrosion at the plug wire contacts, if the button is broken you have to pull the coil out of the cap to get it out they are available at auto parts, if everything looks ok then its the modual, or coil, you need a manual for test proceedures. anips2009-07-07 08:45:16

Todays gas sucks and can go bad quickly, I had to drain my tank recently and that gas would not even start my lawn mower. Just something to not overlook if you don't drive car much.

I tested for spark today as you suggested and not getting one. Having trouble finding a parts store that can test the ignition module, but I think i can tast the coil myself with a volt ohm meter. I have three wires off the coil a black which is the ground and a red and white wire. I think I should see
resistance across the red and wire with a meter, can anyone tell me if thats correct

That would be true Tony...... Advance Auto or Auto Zone can test the module for you if there is one near.

Glad you were able to test the spark....... Shucks I was just gonna tell ya ta grab ahold of the coil wire as somebody cranked her over.......

I had same problem. It was the Ignition Module. Costs around $20. AutoZone tested it and found it it was inoperative.

Good luck at getting it back on the road.

i checked my local autozone said they can't test the module, but I tested the coil and seems to be ok. There is a adavnce auto in NJ not too far, I'll check with them if not I'll probable get a new moduile anyway $20.00 is not too much to worry about, just want to get my vette on the road again, missing all these car shows and cruise nites
