Okay so I'm nuts? but it's not my fault it's the Corvette's! I just traded in my black 82 to the same guy I bought it from and purchased the 2 tone 82! Anyway, the questions is the check engine light comes on stays on for awhile and turns off for awhile and then on again. This car only has 4800 miles on her and she was sitting for awhile. Any ideas on what might be going on or where to start?

You need to get the trouble codes that will tell you whats wrong. Find someone with a scanner to read what trouble codes there are.
Why did you get rid of the black one?

Vette(s): 1981 Great White Shark. Red Interior, 350/190 hp. PS, PB (SS), A/C CC, T-Tops. Served three years in Active Duty Army, then Retired Air Force after 34 years! Badger State Vettes Car Club. 175,000 Original miles!! Now own a 1998 C-5!
Sitting for awhile, electrical connections rust a little. If this 82 has ECM, check that 1st. Read the codes. Solve Problem.

Thanks Gents! I know a guy I can take it to, don't want to drive it to much with that on.2tone82vette 2010-09-12 08:29:54
Good question Dave! It wasn't that I wanted to get rid of the black one or that there was anything wrong with it, more like I just wanted the 2 tone and the originality of it (untouched/unmolested)

Most likely an O2 sensor, or an engine temp sensor issue, but scanning for any codes will help. Also....if the Check Eng light is not on when you scan it, it may not bring up any codes. Early systems did not have the capability to "store" codes, so once the key is turned off, the code will usually disappear, unless it is a "hard" fault that just happens to be happening at the time.

Thank you Joel! Hopefully it will be on when I drop it off...
Joel's right, when I had the light go on it was the O2 sensor the first time, then the next time it was the temp. sensor. Hope everything works out. Good Luck with the car. It's good that you got this one, there isn't enought room in Northwest Jersey for 2 nice black 82's
Hope to see you at the Chatterbox one Saturday night.

Hope to see ya too! I always ended up working on the black one on Sat. and never able to make it up there. I heard you have to get there early! You got that right about the 2 nice black Vettes up here, you would be senior to me anyway to length in ownership, not age.

Yeah, why don't you come to Paul's BBQ on the 25th. There's 3 of us meeting at my place in Flanders and driving down to Paul's, about 1.25 hour ride from here. You can meet a bunch of us and have a great day!
