ZZ3 Crate Engine

Vette(s): 1969 C3 Coupe. Was an L-46 now a ZZ3 w/M-21 4-speed, manual steering and brakes, 3.70 Posi. Red with Balck interior, non-numbers matching.
I am the proud new owner of a 69' Coupe that has had the original motor (L-46) replaced with a ZZ3 crate engine.
While this motor is probably superior technologically to the L-46, it looks very 'Agricultural' sitting in the engine bay with it's black stamped valve covers and all.
Are there 'cooler' looking valve covers for these engines that were perhaps used on Vettes? It has the bolt in the center style covers compared to the original ones around the perimeter.
I would also like to find a set of the original polished 'suppression' covers that go over the distributor cap and wires to make it look a little more original. Any idea if these are available anywhere for a reasonable price?

They do make chrome valve covers in a couple different styles. Or you can get a set of billit aluminum adaptors to put the old style perimeter bolt valve covers on your center bolt heads. GM Performance Parts line at a participating GM dealer should have a GMPP catalog and should be able to help you out. I don't have my GMMP catalog with me at this moment, otherwise I could give you a couple part #'s to check out.

I wish I had the chrome shields in place, also. The intake bolt locations are different on the Vortec heads and intake than on the original 350 motor. The brackets that hold the chrome distributor cover in place will not fit. You might be able to make brackets, but I ended up putting mine in a box on the shelf.

I have a 1978 L48 Pace Car and have wondered about my engine choices...

For dress-up items look at a Summit Racing or Jegs catalog. They have lots of neat stuff to make your engine bay stand out. One word of warning...be wary of inexpensive stamped chrome valve covers and similar parts. I've seen the cheaper grade stuff made of thin guage steel and are very "springy"...nearly impossible to get them to seal against the cylinder heads or other parts and they'll leak oil. They may look great, but you will be constantly retightening the bolts and wiping up oil leaks. Stick with better quality heavier guage steel stampings or aluminum parts. It will be money well spent.

As far as the suppression covers, check some of the restoration suppliers such as Corvette Central, Eckler's, Corvette America, etc. You may also find them on Ebay occassionally.
