I'm about to drop the new ZZ4 motor in today and before you start the motor for the first time I heard that you need to remove the distributer and place a tool in that indexes the oil pump and then using a drill motor, crank the pump to prime the engine with oil before you start the motor.
Is this a manitory step? I would rather not do this if I don't have to. I thought I could just remove the spark plug wires from the cap so the engine wouldn't fire up and just crank the motor over a bit to pump the oil through it for a prime. Then reconnect the plug wires and fire it up. Would that work?
Also once the motor fired up I need to break in the cam by holding the RPMs at 2,000 for 20-30 minutes correct?
Could someone confirm my proceedure?
Thanks,Big%20smile

I just dropped in a GM Crate 270hp yesterday.

We used the tool and it was easy, although you could make one out of a long bladed screwdriver with the handle removed and chuck it in your drill.

Be sure your intake is on, preferably the valve covers are at least set in place if not already down and MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE OIL SENDING UNIT in place.  If not, you will get a face full of oil! (that is assuming the sending unit goes in at the back at the top like mine does)

The possibility exists that the pump might vapor lock if not primed, also this gets oil up thru the heads, push tubes, cam lobes, valleys and journals that would normally have oil flowing thru them.

Did the motor come with the distributor stabbed?  It's easy to stab one, especially if the valve covers aren't on yet.

I was told by the local vette specialist mechanic to bring mine up to 1800 rpm's for 15 minutes.  Did this and had no problems.

The one thing you DON'T want to do is to take it out after you have done the initial run in and drive a set speed (i.e. highway 70mph).  I was told to vary the speed and not to be afraid to get on it some, not hard, but don't baby it either.  (See the thread on "Yet another heart transplant") and (please pass the FIRE EXTINGUISHER)

Let me know if I can help you.  I just finished and have logged about 35 miles so far.  I'll be heading out later today for a 50 mile, stop check and 50 mile back.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!

Everything is already connected with value covers on as far as the engine came to me from the engine depo. I just added the carb, exhaust manifolds, power stearing pump, oil pressure sensor, water temp sensor and pulleys. I don't know what you mean by distributer "stabbed". And what is the oil sending unit? Where is it located?
Can I just crank the motor over without it starting to prime the oil through the motor?

I'm not saying it's a good thing, but I didn't prime mine, I just started it up. These motors are broke in at the factory before they ship them. Good luck in what ever you do.

I primed my ZZ4. Go borrow the tool at Autozone. Better safe than sorry.

Not priming the pump operates everything dry for a few moments possibly causing undo friction damage.  It is too easy a step not to do it.
