Vette(s): 1979, 350sb, as my kids affectionately call it "shit brown" Corvette purchased in 1996. 84,000+ miles. Not a show car, but I love her just the same.
My 79 doesn't have a hatch in the rear (because of rear defog?) so I'm wondering if this kit would work. Actually didn't know this was an option on '79 models. Does it require different weatherstrip, and if so does it come with the kit?

yes this will convert your solid window to a hatchback. this hatchvette kit NOS (new old stock) was manufactured by cars & concepts out of michigan in the late 78-79 era. the general (GM) even bought over 6k of the kits from them to install in the 1982 collectors edition. this is a complete, new, virgin kit including window with defroster, mounting hardware, struts, weatherstrip, decals & instructions. $3K. the last time one was on ebay, it went for just about that. the junk yards are selling the hatchback window from a 1982 collectors edition around $2K, but why would you want to install a used hatchback with worn parts on your vette?

Thanks for the info. I'll keep it in the back of my mind, but $3k can be spent in higher priority areas at this time and in the near future. It might be something I'll want to do in the future, but can't justify it now.
Again thanks!

Again thanks!

I remember this kit, when I bought my 79 (new) I saw this kit being offered in a corvette magazine. It is a nice conversion for a 78-82 Corvette. I believe this kit sold new for around $1,200.00. In todays currency $3,000.00 isn't all that far out of range; although I also would love to have it I'm afraid that this amount of money is out of my and most owners budget. If you are willing to forgo originality for a customized car and can do the work yourself then you would have a great customized car. I would only imagine that to have this work performed at your local Corvette shop the labor would add another $2,000 to $2,500 to this conversion. Making this a rather expensive custom conversion. One that would not increase the value of your car by $5,000-$6,000, and a future buyer wouldn't be willing to pay additional $$ for this non factory option. Also this conversion is not for the light hearted backyard mechanic, like most of us are. Best of luck to whom ever purchases this.
