Dgraphic911 said: . . . I got a feeling this car may be a ripoff, he wants bb dough for it. I know it will nver be NCRS original but i wanted to make it a good looking codes matching original. Numbers maybe, with the right stamps , but hell we all know thats not fair. . . He wants 12K for it, runs drives, top is a soft top not in bad shape, hood has bubbles, some chips but great at 50 feet. interior a little faded but 7-8 out of 10, chrome good. Tired 350, tranny isn't shifting fast, ( auto) . beat sidepipes. Frame not bad, from what i can see. sidepipes were hot and he didn't want to take it to a garage. ( old guy, pain in the ass) you know the type. he remembers when they were new yada yada yada. IS it worth buying for the price. Could I dump it if i NEEDED TO. Thanks again for all the replies |
12-grand for a ragged-out heap of mismatched parts?

Sounds like someone needs $12K and has some good stories to tell. He's looking for some dumb-ass kid with more dollars than sense. The LAST thing this guy wants to see is an informed shopper who will ask questions. Be the informed shopper.
If, as you say, your goal is to build it into a "good looking codes-matching" car, you have to be willing and able to part with about 15 grand just for the restoration. (The repro '69-only sidepipes alone are $2,500.) The Vette market is nowhere near thin enough to net out $27K for the car you would have. As for being able to "dump it" if you have to, those odds are stacked against you unless you get the car for the $8K that it's probably worth today. It is NOT an original car and it never will be ("a car is original only once - period").
After all the dust settles, a car (like anything else) is only worth what someone else is willing to pay. This is a business transaction, and you only get one chance to make the right deal.
Good luck

John

Vette(s): White 73 convertible - 350/auto, A/C PS, PB, PW, leather, t/t, two tops
Also had a 69 t-top 20 years ago
12 grand sounds awfully high for that car. I only paid 13 for mine and it's all original and in great shape (added new top, rebuilt rear swing arms and did a couple of frame repairs). Joe
For what its worth the BB cars go for big bucks, but generally ONLY if the #s match and the frame/body is straight. If you have one in this shape its worth restoring it(providing you do it right, don't cut corners), you will always be able to get your money back out of it down the road. We have all seen how much the 63-67 BB cars have gone up over the past few years, the 68-74 BB are going to be near those prices very soon. I won't fool around with a non-matching # BB, if you want a BB but don't want to spend the cheese just pick up an SB car and toss a 502 crate motor in it ;) Either way just be VERY cautious before you plunk down your monty.
