Well, it is with a heavy heart, however I got orders this morning to report to 4th Marine Division New Orleans, LA no later than 15 Jan. I can't see spending almost 1000$ to transport the Vette just to leave it sit while I most likely head to a different desert. SO...

That just sucks. Perhaps you can rent a storage facility to put the car in. Like the U-store it.
Do you have family or friends somewhere that you could put it in a garage, or in nearby storage?
Selling it is something you will regret until you get another one.
Don't ship it. Drive it to somewhere, than take a bus back to where you were. Or rent a trailer and borrow, rent a truck to get it there.
There is a storage unit in a good neighbor hood close by to me. Put it there, lock it up, keep the door key. I'll drive be and keep an eye on the unit. Or perhaps find someone closer to where you are, or where you will be, and do the same thing. If you do it where you are, you can retrieve the car when you come back from the sand. Worry about transporting it then.
Just thoughts.

I'm with Ken, Find storage somewhere until you get back. I'd have to ask but my grandfather has unused barn space. Wish I had $4k...
Good luck over seas. And sir...THANK YOU!

Vette(s): 1979, 350sb, as my kids affectionately call it "shit brown" Corvette purchased in 1996. 84,000+ miles. Not a show car, but I love her just the same.
Man, if I had the new house with acreage and a pole barn that the wifeand I are shopping for right now I'd tell you to store it until you come back. Hell, I'd even fly out and pick it up for you!
Don't sell! If there's any other way...DON'T SELL!
Hope to hear from you again real soon, whether from the desert there or from the desert here. We'll keep you in our hearts while you're gone.

Thank you all for the suggestions and kind words. Really it comes down to being worried about my wife while I am gone. Moving from 29 Palms, CA to New Orleans isn't cheap, and I want to make sure there is as much money in the savings as possible, just in case anything should arise while I am gone.
I could take the Vette, or store it in my Dad's garage, but I think it's best at this time to let it go.
I'd feel a lot better when I step on the plane if there were 4,000$ more in the savings account.
While i'm there I have already told my wife her mission is to find me a steel bumpered big block. I should make quite a bit of "extra" money, so when I get back it won't be long until i'm back in the Vette owners club again. And much wiser about what to look for next time.
Again, thank you all... and i'll still be here, California, New Orleans, Iraq, or Afghanistan...

Hey Davii,
I can truly relate. I'm a platoon sgt for a transportation company in the Army. I deployed in March of 2003 abd redeployed in January a couple of months early due to some minor health issues. I became Vette owner when I came home since I earned some extra sheckles and the great american sports car was always my dream to own.
But coming from a similar stuation, I cannot disagree with you. My first focus when I left my wife and 4 kids was to leave them in the best financial situation possible. If this is what gives you better piece of mind, so be it. There's nothing worse than being half way around the world and saying I should have! There are tons of Vettes out there - you only have 1 family (well maybe 2 if you count a bunch of gearheads on a website that truly understand your situation and really care about you and every other troop in the zone).
So do what's best for family and in the event that you need financial asstsance when you get home, I'll personally and gladly spearhead the committee through the club - Vettes for Veterans!!
Email is up and running really well on all the bases. So are the phones. You should be able to send us updates from the sand!!
BTW, I have all sorts of extra equipment that I came home from the war with. If there's anything at all you can think of, get in touch with me before you spend a dime!! Even if it's just questions about deploying in Iraq. My home phone is 732-730-3880.
God bless, God Speed, Get home Soon and keep your ass down!!
