I am restoring a '69 coupe. The rear cross member/diff carrier is badly rusted and needs to be replaced. I am looking for a solid piece. Cosmetics unimportant.

hi,
i am trying to get my rear cross member off my 71 so i can blast the frame.
BUT, i'm having a real hard time trying to pry it off.
(yes, i took the 2 bolts out the holds it to the frame)
the rear end has been removed
am i missing something?
is there a trick for this?
any help will be appreciated.

Currently undergoing a frame-off resto. and modifications.YEEHAW!!!
Joe,
I also had the same problem when disassembling the frame of my 77. My suggestion would be to soak the points that fit into each other in PB Blaster, or another type of that solvent, let it sit for a few days, keep applying the spray, keep it wet. After this, get yourself a LARGE prybar, and a good hammer. A rubber mallet was useless for me, I had to go with the hammer of Thor. (a 3 lb. sledge hammer)
Jam the prybar in between the two parts. Slam it in there with the hammer if you can. then begin to pry on the bar, or try to do this. Bang on the crossmember with Thor while you're prying. Get as close to the mounting area as you can.
This job is a real PITA, but it works. It will take a while to seperate them.
Good Luck

alan,
thanks for that info.
but i got it off a few hours ago !
finally!
i did soak it with PB Blaster last night and when i got home from work today i took my BIG prybar and started working at it!
i finally broke one side free and the other came off pretty easy after that!
the only thing i think that makes it hard to get off is because it creates a vacuum inside that pocket with the rubber mount.
its like pulling a suction cup straight off of a glass window!
anyways.
MY FRAME IS COMPLETELY STRIPPED OF ALL ITS PARTS NOW !!
YAHOO !
now i can start blasting all the suspension parts and the frame !!
thanks to everyone for all their help !

Do you still need the crossmember? I have two. One is in great shape and one has some holes cut out with a torch.

Do yourself (or the next person who will taking off the crossmember) a favor and put some anti-sieze on the socket area. I was lucky that someone did that for me. Crossmember came off with little effort when I was expecting a major yank.
