In May, I sent Montrief/US Corvettes a $5000 deposit on a steel cities gray 1972 LT-1 that for over two months showed on his website as under deposit but that is now up again as just one of his cars for sale. In May, he told me the car was not ready, as some work remained to be done to make it conform to the ad. As part of the deal, I told him I would have the car inspected. When he told me the car was ready, I had it inspected by Robert DeMars. As soon as I received Mr. DeMars' report, I told Montrief that the deal was off and I wanted my deposit back. After many promises (coupled with general nastiness) that the money would be credited back to my credit card, today he told me he had filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection and that I would not get my money back. The bankruptcy filing may make getting my $5000 back difficult, but I intend to give it a fight. It sounds like I got off easy compared to some others. Too bad I didn't read this column before I sent my money.
