Topic: 100 Octane Gas
in Forum: C3 Fuel, Emission Control, and Exhaust Systems
Well I had to give it a try.
I found a Sunoco station about 20 miles away that sells "Q" fuel which is 100 octane racing gasoline. I took a ride this morning (first after a Pertronix II upgrade) and plunked down $50 bucks for 10.002 gallons ($4.99 per gallon) of gas, as did a friend who put the same in his '67 390ci Stang.
The verdict: We both felt that our cars ran a little better, but I honestly am quite happy with Sunoco's 94 octane Ultimate which is readily avaialble here.
Basically it was an expensive experiment, and a little treat for the car. I probably burned 2 gallons ($10 worth) just coming home.

I came to the exact conclusion after spending a bundle for a fill-up of the same stuff. Gotta love the smell, though.

I have used the UnoCal 100 unleaded in a turbo car that competes in SCCA autocross event. Allows much higher boost pressures and you can advance the ignition quite a bit. But without some "adjustments" on the engine to take advantage of the higher octane, you will probably get very little gain. Perhaps on some of the newer cars with knock sensors and performance chips you may get a better kick in the pants, but not on a good old C3.
But it sure does smell good....someone should offer that as a car air freshener....
FYI, there is a company out there that sells air freshner for your fuel tank. You just pour it in and your exhaust gas will take on the smell of what ever you poured in.
If you ever have gas fumes that burn your nose try this stuff it works.

who used to put 100LL av gas into his bmw! im suprised he
didnt destroy his emissions equip and void his warranty!
the fuel truck i used was another story- it was a 76 chevy that
had something equivalent to a L-48 engine, and it was been
running on it for years! in fact, id say it ran pretty good on it vs
regular gas. the thing i noticed is that it seemed to burn the
100LL at a faster rate than regular pump gas.
in the end, id say that 94 octane will work the best
