Vette(s): 1982 C3 Collectors Edition 44000 miles, sat in the sun most of its life, My wife purchased it for me for Father's Day in 2007 from her girlfriend that had it for 19 years. It is on the road again. I'm retired but it is now my daily driver.
I just got my fuel injected 1982 vette running idles fast 1200 do not have a manual that talks about idle speed setting with fuel injection. Changed plugs and it runs good just idle at this time. Was sitting for two years before I got it. Any ideas on what to do first or which is a good book that deals with tune ups for limited edition 1982 vettes.

The factory service manual is the best you can get. You can find them on e-bay usually around $40 or less.
The idle on the cross-fire can be a little finicky at times. After sitting that long the ISC(Idle Air Control) solenoid(s) may be stuck, and may need to be replaced. I have some info here on idle re-learn procedures, but it won't work if the IAC is bad, or not operating correctly(and..it's pretty involved). If you have some way to scan the ECM, and get the IAC data, it may help to determine where to go with it.
Making sure there are no vacuum leaks would be a good place to start, too. A vac. leak will create an unstable idle situation.

Gilbert, Does it idle at 1200 for a while and then settle down to a lower idle speed or does it stay at 1200? Joel was, as always, right on with his things that could be wrong and about the GM shop manual. Dont mistake one of the aftermarket manuals for the GM product there is a world of difference. There is a manual on ebay right now with a "buy it now" price of $45.00 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1982-Corvette-Shop-Manual_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ34215QQihZ007QQitemZ170170571244QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
Keep in mind, there is not a seperate fast idle control. If you plug the air intake ports for the idle control motor, the idle will go to a minimum air setting of about 450 rpm warm in neutral. If it's over 500 you have an additional problem. Any vacuum leak will create a fast idle, including a failed or wrong PCV valve. Dont' forget to check the brake booster for a leak.
After that the idle is controlled by the ISC (idle speed control motor) which is a stepper motor controlled by the ECM (computer). The computer controls it with pulses from 0 to a count of 255 steps.
If the commands are correct, the ISC needs to be replaced.
If the commands are not correct, check the other inputs. If the computer thinks the engine is cold, it will idle fast. The commands can be checked with a scan tool.
But most of the time, the problem is not computer related. It's a sticking throttle plate or vacuum leak, or failed ISC.

Thanks for your input. It mostly stays at 1200 or a little higher. I had it out tonight doing some in town driving. When i took off for stops it would surg every time sometime around 15 miles per hour and again about 25 miles per hour. Above that speed it just takes off and wants to run.
The engine only has 44000 miles on it my wife purchased the C3 from her girl friend who purchased it new.
There seems to be a difference in the Factory Shop manual and the Factory Service Manual. Factory Shop manual is on ebay for $45. Zip have reprints of the original shop service manuals for $110. Any help on which manual?

What is the correct Idle for a crossfire car?
Between 600 and 700 warm in neutral. I dont' have the exact spec in front of me, but it is about the same as any other stock V8

The manual you want is the red and white "Shop Manual". It will have the chevrolet and GM logo on the front. Mine shows a number ST-364-82 on it. There is also an assembly manual which is also a must have in my opinion but the shop manual would be my first purchase. Idle problems are the most common complaint on crossfires. With that few miles on the car, I really dont think the throttle plate shafts would be worn and sucking air. Check the connections on the coolant temperature sensor located on the front of the engine just below the thermostat housing, the connector may have a white plastic cover over it. The sensor may be defective and need replacing. Chevyjunkie, I cant speak for anyone else but mine idles at around 650 and Im satisfied with that.

Thank you. I purchase the shop Manual you placed a link on. You are correct on some of the other publications I have do not go into the fuel injection and specific 1982 engine issues a lot.
It seems most everybody with crossfires have the idle problem, as do I. Mine idles real well when it is cold, but then goes to around 1000 rpm and stays. It is hard on shifting, my transmission has a shift kit of some kind and shifts very quickly, so the clutches do not help in forward gears at shifting through neutral, but work nicely going into reverse.
Fast idle has so many variables to solve, I am working on other things first, like vacuum leaks, but basically it run very good.
terntes.
