I have stock exhaust manifolds on the 71 but the ehaust system installed by PO (previous owner) is not stock. Mufflers are what I believe my Dad used to call "Cherry bombs", round and quite loud. I would like to return the mufflers to something more stock appearing and quieter. Books all say the LT1 has 2 1/2 inch exhaust system. Where do I measure the pipes to verify before I order mifflers (you know Murphy's Law). These pipes have different measurements depending on where you measure, and in fact the current pipes measure less than 2.5 inches outside diameter where they go into the cherry bombs.

I would go with a kit made for your car from MidAmerica and a couple of flowmaster deltaflow 40's or 50's. It'll fit right and be easy to install, and, it will sound great.

Who knows what could have been changed with the new exhaust system installed by the P.O. If it's 2-1/2" everywhere but the muffler connections, a muffler shop or maybe even auto parts store can set you up with some fittings to adapt to 2-1/2" mufflers. Maybe it's time to condsider replacing the system again depending on it's condition?
When I replaced the pipes on "The Toy" I left the stock 2" exhaust manifolds on but upgraded to the 2 1/2" pipes (I forget which parts house I got them from). The pipes bolted right on the manifolds and then flared out the extra 1/2". The curious thing was that the mufflers have 2 1/2" inlet but only 2" outlet. But then I couldn't find 2 1/2" exhaust bezels so it all worked out anyway. I just went with the stock mufflers and am happy with the sound (not too quiet, not too loud, but just right!
