what headers would work with the stock exhaust (aka: replacing manifolds with headers) and not require any replacing of the stock exhaust pipes and mufflers (cause the pipes and mufflers are all new and I dont want to have to buy others) Thanks yall |thumb| |thumb|

Vette(s): 1972 Coupe Anything, but Stock and more mods to come! SSBC Force 10 Brakes, 3.73, TH350, 355 CID, Rack and Pinion, Vette Brakes suspension front and rear.
Non that I am aware of. Its because all headers made for our years tend to be long tubes. But it should cost more the $60 to get new pipes made that run from the headers to the Mufflers.

You could possibly use stock Tuned-Port C4 header/manifolds. They are a true 2.5" outlet and are like shortie headers. They are very similar dimensionally to the stock manifolds. A drawback is that they use a ball-type (rounded) attachment to the pipe whereas the original manifolds had a cone-type (tapered) attachment. Another drawback is your stock manifold is a 2" outlet where they are 2.5". You might use a block-hugger street-rod shortie header and only have to have the collectors welded to your pipe, but if you do that you may as well use long tube type.

Or you can look into finding a set of '81/'82 factory tubular stainless exhaust manifolds. They were like a shorty headers. You have to cut off the A.I.R. tubes and weld the openings shut if you are not going to use the smog pump. '81's had a 2" opening and I'm not positive but I believe that '82's had a 2.5" opening. Your tapered exhaust pipes should bolt right in. They have the same profile as the old "ramhorn" manifolds.

Excellent thought on the 82 manifolds. Good point too on removing the AIR tubes. That would apply to the TPI manifolds as well. I have one 82 manifold that the AIR tubes have corroded through, but is otherwise sound. It would be a good candidate for this type of modification. If interested, let me know.

I don't know whether they will fit-probably will. But, headers use a flat flange at the collector. Manifolds use a cone-shaped flange. Those headers will probably have a 3" outlet, your manifolds have a 2" outlet. You will have to cut off a few inches of pipe and weld on a header collector which defeats your stated purpose.
