Hey Ya'll, Just heard about this sight today, IT'S GREAT!!!!!
I'd like to know whats the best way to remove the gas tank to retrive the sticker off of the top? I can't get to all of the hose clamps through the filler hole. Would it be possable to lower the tank 4-5" to be able to get to the clamps without bending any of the fuel lines? Also, does anyone know what is the best thing to use to remove the sticker from the tank and a good way to preserve it? Thanks for any help.

I dropped my tank about 5 months ago and took my sheet off. not to difficult. start with an as emtpy tank as you can. disconnect the fuel line at the bottom of the tank and drain all fuel. loosten the tank strap nuts at the rear most frame cross bar. un bokt the crossbar at the front of the tank 2 bolts on each side. you can now push this bar forward and the tank will drop. be sure to have some way to support the tank ,ie a friend or some boxes or jack stands. drop the tank down a few inches and then you can reach the vapor reurn lines at the upper left side of the tank. they are held on with spring clamps so you will need pliers to squeeze the clamps to pull the hoses off. after that the tank is free to remove. before you do this i would suggest you get a new tank neck gasket, return hose and a neck seal. my neck seal wasn't bad but it is a great time to replace it. my neck gasket was broken and leaking but you cannot see it untill you drop the tank and the return hose was missing. luckily i had already ordered all of these. once you see the sticker tank lots of photos of it BEORE you try to take it off. apply mild heat (i used a heat gun) to it to soften the glue holding it on. take your time, you only get one chance at this. once removed take more photos. to store go to a picture frame shop or art and craft shop and get an acid free frame or acid free envelope, or acid free plastic folder and store it in a dark, dry place lying flat. this will protect the sheet from any further damage.

Thanks Gerry, I got my tank off, all the gas lines(3ea.) are on top of the 78's tank, makes it a little harder to get to. My sticker is there but in about 3 pieces with 2 big patches of glue holding it to the tank, do you or anyone out there know of a good safe way to disolve the glue? Thanks for all the help. Chuck

i think anything you use would wipe out the ink on the sheet. just apply heat with a heat gun and the glue will soften up and let go. i didn't have any problem doing this. heat and slide a wide flat scraper under the sheet slowly. don't forget those photos first!
