Hey everybody, so I've asked around and searched this forum and I'm wondering what after market intake and carb combo works under a stock 79 L82 hood? The consensus seems to be the Edelbrock performer intake (no spacer). I'd just like to get a warm and fuzzy before spending some money.  I got a built 383 waiting to be decked out. It ran the dyno like a champ with a pro comp air gap manifold, and a 750 demon carb. The intake came with the engine but I declined on buying the carb because I really want to use the stock hood. I would really appreciate some feedback from someone with a similar set up.

Since I have a 72, can't answer your hood clearence question but i'm wondering what HP and torque your 383 produced on the dyno.

Welcome to C3VR!
Do a "Search" on the subject, and you'll see several threads on this! It is a popular discussion around here, as a lot of folks like to change the intakes/carbs, and have run into the same issues.
I can tell ya, tho, with an air-gap intake, chances are you're not gonna be able to run a stock hood on a '79, no matter what air cleaner you try.

If you have a 383 stroker I'm not sure the Performer is what you want. It's a good intake for a stock small block but I think it would cost you some horsepower and torque number, or at least put them in a rpm range you might not want.

The '78 L82 I recently sold had a Performer intake I installed with the original Q-jet carb and I liked the combination. You might want something made to better take advantage of the torque ability of the 383...maybe an Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap, but you would need a drop base air cleaner to use it with your stock hood.

I would suggest contacting Edelbrock's tech department (or Holley's or Summit Racing or Jeg's) and tell them what you have and what you want out of it. They can give you good recommendations for an intake and carburetor to give you the best results.

Yeah I'd love to keep the air gap intake it already has and get the demon 750 carb, I really do not want to change the hood if at all possible. I'm going to call edelbrock today. If I can get away with an air gap intake and a drop down air cleaner then I will post my results. Next stop hedders. Thanks for the feedback.

i DON`T THINK YOUR GOING TO HAVE TOO MUCH LUCK WITH AN AIRGAP  TRYING TO CLEAR THE HOOD.  I`VE BEEN DEALING WITH THE ISSUE FOR A YEAR NOW. iVE HAD EVERY DIFFERENT CARB AND INTAKE I COULD BUY TO TRY AND CLEAR MY STOCK HOOD. ALTHOUGH YOURS DFOES HAVE A SLIGHT MORE ROOM THAN MINE. I DECIDED TO GET AN L-88 HOOD, WHICH WILL BE INSTALLED   THIS MONTH.  YOU`LL WANT TO GET THE MAX OUT OF THAT 383 BELIEVE   ME, AND DON`T FORGET YOUR GAS CREDIT CARD WHEN YOU DRIVE IT . LOL.  GOOD LUCK. LET`S US KNOW YOUR FINAL COMBINATION

I have a Demon and an Edelbrock Intake . All I did was trim the hood blanket.

I also have a spare Edelbrock, new in the box at home in my garage that I'd sell ya.  But it'll be Sept. till I'm home.

I think you shop guys were right. That seems very very conservative for a 383 stroker.  American Speed built my engine and my dyno sheet shows 505hp and 512 ft lbs torque at 4200 rpm.

You will enjoy the ride, but like Bob said, you'll pay dearly for it at the gas pumps.  Good Luck with your clearance problem.

Well after much deliberation I decided to stick with the professional products manifold that came with the engine and get a Corvette Hi-Rise Hood, 1977 - 1981 from ecklers. There goes my budget Dead I'll most likely get a demon 750 carb unless convinced otherwise. No point in building a hot rod if I have to smother my engine just to use the stock hood. At least now I can move on to the hedders and exhaust. I called Sanderson and they recomended the CC5 Block huggers. Is anyone running these and if so any issues? I'm going to run true dual (no cat). Many Thanks to all who replied! The lights are on but no one's home look from parts store guys was getting old.
