Topic: 81 Can it be true dual
in Forum: C3 Fuel, Emission Control, and Exhaust Systems

Hey rescuejt,
I have an '81. I recently dropped in a new non-computer controlled distributor and carb, thus eliminating the effect of the computer. However, I have read on the L-81 forum they guys have gone to true duals with no adverse affects to the computer controlled devices, as long as you keep the O2 sensor. If you're installing headers too, that may be a different story. With new headers, it appears that most guys either replace the chip in their ECM with a "Stage 1 or 2" chip, so the timing and fuel mix will be appropriate for a more free-flowing system OR they replace the carb and distributor as I did.
One more thing, in case you haven't thought of it: you will have to find someone willing to install the true dual exhaust without a catalytic converter. I plan on doing the same thing in a month or two and I cannot find anyone locally who will touch the job. All the exhaust shops say "they'd (the EPA) shut us down if we got caught." For that reason, I am considering the following options:
a. finding a small place out in the sticks that isn't intimidated by the EPA threats
b. going side exhaust and installing myself.
c. renting a portable welder and hacking together an under car system myself (really don't want to go there...)
I still don't know for sure, but the local Chevy dealer that does NYS inspections told me that whatever came on the car has to still be on the car when they inspect it. So if it came with cats, you need to have cats, even if they don't work. So my plan to put dual chambered exhaust or side pipes on my '82 is on hold until I can find an inspector who likes old Corvettes.

If you have anything in writing to the contrary, please send it to me.
