I do a walk through but don't enter. I can't compete against the caliper of cars comming to that show. MAYBE IF I HAD CHROME BUMPERS... I could probally make kids choice but that's okay... It takes away a complete day and I haven't had that to spare.

Hey rescuejt,

I have an '81.  I recently dropped in a new non-computer controlled distributor and carb, thus eliminating the effect of the computer.   However, I have read on the L-81 forum they guys have gone to true duals with no adverse affects to the computer controlled devices, as long as you keep the O2 sensor.  If you're installing headers too, that may be a different story.  With new headers, it appears that most guys either replace the chip in their ECM with a "Stage 1 or 2" chip, so the timing and fuel mix will be appropriate for a more free-flowing system OR they replace the carb and distributor as I did.

One more thing, in case you haven't thought of it: you will have to find someone willing to install the true dual exhaust without a catalytic converter.  I plan on doing the same thing in a month or two and I cannot find anyone locally who will touch the job.  All the exhaust shops say "they'd (the EPA) shut us down if we got caught."  For that reason, I am considering the following options:

a. finding a small place out in the sticks that isn't intimidated by the EPA threats

b. going side exhaust and installing myself.

c. renting a portable welder and hacking together an under car system myself (really don't want to go there...)

Hey Ron,
I still don't know for sure, but the local Chevy dealer that does NYS inspections told me that whatever came on the car has to still be on the car when they inspect it. So if it came with cats, you need to have cats, even if they don't work. So my plan to put dual chambered exhaust or side pipes on my '82 is on hold until I can find an inspector who likes old Corvettes.
If you have anything in writing to the contrary, please send it to me.

Sorry I haven't been on a while.
Fed regulations state that anything OVER 25 years old is exempt from emission laws.  Period.
California now requires 30 years, and is considering 35.  A few other states follow their lead, but only a couple.

The cat converter does NOTHING to help your performance.  It is only an emission device.  Unless it is plugged, it does not affect your performance in any way EXCEPT it makes the exhaust quite restrictive.   Newer converters are much better, but the early ones really choke the exhaust.

Replacing the exhaust with a true dual will be better in every way, except emissions.   Just consider how you want to go,and how much noise you want to make.

The exhaust upgrade will only help to a limited extent.  But a stronger motor will be able to take advantage of a better exhaust system if you ever decided to build more power in the future.

Are you planning to put on headers?  With a stock engine use the long/small diamiter headers.   You will get better low end response, or at least not lose low end.  Top end will improve.

WIth headers, true dual 2 1/2 inch pipes and a Weiand 8004 intake I picked up about 8% horsepower at the wheel.

As suspected in an above statement I recommend checking with your state regs, and then "Just do it!"
