Vette(s): 82 Charcoal Grey Metallic, 5.7L EFI loaded, glass tops, all original except for recent muffler replacement with DynoMax units. SWEET RIDE! For Sale... $13,500 FIRM
Clean CarFax Report!!! I know the second owner!
Would some one please tell me what benifit there is to replacing my probably weak original 82 "Crossfire" fuel pump with a new Delco 85 "TPI" pump?
What is the part number of the best pump?
How to install? Is it a direct fit in place of the 82?
Trying to eliminate a hesitation and surge but do not want to make the problem worse.
Thanks for any input!

I don't think you want to do that. The TPI pump is much higher pressure, I don't know if your fuel pressure regulator would handle that much. I suppose that it is also higher volume, but on a more-or-less stock engine I don't think you will get a benefit. I would look elsewhere for the problem. Be sure you are getting the proper pressure now.
YES, that is a very good up grade. But check your TPS (Throttle Position Senser) for correct out put voltage. Check these guys out for ANYTHING crossfire.

I completely agree with Jim. The guys at the crossfire forum are the guru's for the cross fire setup.

Thanks guys!
First off, Thank you for your advise and comments!
I went to the crossfire forum site and most agreed that before doing any other diag or repairs upgrade the fuel pump to the 85TPI unit first. I replaced the pump and in tank sock filter. I also replaced the original 02 sensor at the same time. The car started quicker than it ever has and a quick snap throttle test desplayed much better performance. Test drive was suprisingly better at any throttle/load! I drove the car to Lake Tahoe over the weekend and still noticed a minor surge at part throttle with the TCC fully locked up. I remember these early back pressure EGR valves causing surging problems when the back pressure was high or when the sensing part of the valve was defective or plugged with carbon. I ran it without EGR and the surge was almost completely gone and with out TCC or EGR it is gone. I suspect an ignition problem since when it surges the tach also gets a little eratic. EGR and TCC both put extra load on the ignition system as the engine is lugging at a very low RPM, much like powerbraking. I will probably replace the pickup coil and module next since they are both original and GM has had many problems with both. What do you think?
