At Carlisle 2003 I saw an '82 with side exhaust. The covers were fiberglass(?) painted body color. It was a very clean look. Any idea where I can find more info on these? |wavey|

Kerry, I believe what you were looking at are the stock 1969 side exhaust, with the fiberglass covers paint as you wish. I have this on my 69. I purchased the complete package probally 5 years ago at a show in Chicago, from a company called Allens Exhaust. They came with shorty heeaders, a short length of stainless pipe bent 90* flanged on one end to bolt to the header end, and the side exhaust was also stainless with a socket that the stub end of pipe from the header to the side pipe could either be clamped or welded. I believe they made regular tubing or stainless, I didn't ever want to deal with exhasut again and as of right now they are still great. The only thing that I would have done different is to either have the shorty header Jett Hotted or ceramic coated. The covers can be painted just like a nornal fiblerglass part. You may be able to find this Allens Exhaust doing a search. Or I know either Ecklers or Mid Ameica sell thes packages. I just saw a post a week or so ago on another side pipe issue and I though that Mid America also have the original dies from GM for the factory original covers, but the last time I checked they were $2000+, alittle pricy at $2000+, but they do look very nice.

Good luck in your venture. I love my pipes but this afternoon I went for a ride and it does get a bit annoying on long drives, hard to hear the radio, and with the tops off and windows down it can get lets say boring..........I'm not sure what type of baffeling I have in my pipes, if it is the reverse flow or glasspack stle, if I had to guess I would say the reverse flow, but not sure.

You can also buy the "stock" mufflers done in stainless from Ecklers or Mid America for $749.00 and fiberglass '69 style covers for under $300.00. But as Dave says, the original ones are a fortune. I did see a complete set of original side pipes for a '69 in the NCRS Driveline a few months back for $1200.00 so there are deals out there, ya just gotta be lucky.

I have a set of stock 69 side pipes covers & mufflers that I'm selling for $1600.oo The chrome is in great shape as well as the instalators. The mufflers will fit a small block & need some minor work on the pipe were it hooks up to the manifold on one side...
