Hi guys, after the success of finding someone to send my new tyres to me in Aus, I am now looking for a new dual ballanced exhaust.

I want to replace the origanal exhaust on my 79 (with added bonus of getting rid of the cat)  with a dual one and looked at most of the exhaust sites but they don't seem to have a system were the 2 front pipes are joined a couple of feet back from the manifold, thus making it a ballanced exhaust. This also helps stopping the resonating of the exhaust thru to the cabin.
I have been quoted $AU1200.00 Cry($US954.00) to manufactor one here, with muffler's, but this seems alot when the prices are so cheap in the USA.

1--Has anyone seen a dual exhaust like this.
2-- What is a good muffler to use with a new dual exhaust

Thanks in advance

G'day Andy,

The stock crossmember on a 79 has the passthrus for the dual exhaust primaries, making it fairly difficult to do a crossover closer to the engine. I have seen a custom "X-pipe" flanged in behind the trans crossmember and the guy had mixed feelings between the benefits vs hassles...

As far as mufflers, there are a lot of good manufacturers out there. I have staright pipes (2 1/2") with flowmasters - love the sound and performance.

Good luck! Let us know how you make out.

Hey Andy from down under,
I've got a true dual system on my '79. I got it from Mid America Motorworks (www.mamo.com).
I briefly considered trying to get an X-Pipe set up for mine but learned that the relatively low horsepower in the '79 would not allow for a noticeable performance benefit.
I recently upgraded to Magnaflow mufflers on this true dual system and I'm very happy with the result!
Let us know what you go with.
Kevin

I had a local muffler shop cut in a H-pipe on my 73. It is mounted just behind the crossmember. All they did was cut a hole in the side of the pipes and weld in a piece between them. I don't know if it really did anything but it only cost me $20.

I also went with a true dual stainless steel pipe set-up from MAM. I decided to go with the KBD twin tip mufflers.  So far I am pleased with the results.   Here is a short video I made.  The audio is not the greatest but it sounds much better in person. It has a deep throaty growl at idle, smooths out at higher rpms and roars when you get on it.

Corvettes and women are the same...You want to make love to them but they keep breaking down.

The '74 system is a bolt in if you have a four speed, and you only need to change the center hanger if you have an automatic.  Or you can modify your existing center hanger by welding an additional hanger on the other side.  We sell the Allens system.  We sell at least ten times as many aluminized systems as stainless.  They are quieter, easier to work with, and considerably cheaper.  We get $379.00 for a complete system including donuts and clamps.  I agree with the comments about there not being a measurable benefit to adding the connecting "H" pipe unless you are making a lot of horsepower.

Thanks for the feed back, I agree it may not be worth the effort to get the H-PIPE, just a whole lot easier to get a true dual.

Still waiting to get my tyres from the US and make sure there are no hidden costs that will blow the budget, if all ok then will look a bit deaper.

I have true duals with magnaflow mufflers, had a local shop cut in a cross over just behind tranny. Just like Brian it only cost a few bucks to have it done.

Hi Andy, I'm a "Magnaflow" (for mufflers) fan, but I wouldn't worry about the crossover pipes myself, just not enough gain to be worthwhile. Good luck.
