between 6 and 8 mpg hungry
I was having some trouble with restarts when the engine was warm/hot. Couldn't touch the carb without burning the fingers. On the advice of a friend I bought a Mr. Gasket spacer kit and put as many of the layers as I could between the carb and intake manifold to get max separation and yet allow the hood to close. I ended up adding about 3/4 of an inch which meant I had to fabricate a new link for the mechanical choke, but other than that no problems.
Since doing that the carb stays much, much cooler (warm to the touch now versus DAMN THAT'S HOT!) and the restart problems have gone away.

Not only do the spacers make a big difference, but it depends on what kind of spacer. The fiber will help more than the alum.
Well it's official. The Holley "blue" electric fuel pump cured my boiling / vapor lock woes. The mechanical pump is in trash. Interestingly enough, not only did it cure the boiling fuel, I no longer have engine run on when I shut down. I think the vaporizing fuel caused a lean condition and thereby increased cylinder heat.
(danger)....Just a novice guess. The important point is the engine runs great now in all climate temps. I did have a small problem with the liquid filled fuel pressure gauge. Seems that when the engine compartment warmed up, it went to "0"
This was no help. Popped in a non-liquid filled gauge and "bingo" correct reading all the time. Hopes this info helps some of you out there with similar problems.

Nice goin', Bret! Where did you mount the pump? I'm going with the elec. pump myself, even though I solved the boiling problem. Seems there was a heater hose in contact with my fuel line (again, novice guess, as you put it). I established a gap between the two and a strip of reflective material did it. Just for kicks, I filled up with 110 octane racing fuel served up by a local Sunoco station. Since this is cooler-burning gas, it could be a factor also. Can't do that too often, though, not at $3.91/gal. Good luck and have a good weekend.

JR,
I mounted the elec. fuel pump on the rear x-member, next to the fuel tank per Holley's instructions. What really made it a snap was a wiring harness put out by PAINLESS. It included a relay, curcuit breaker, and everything else you would need. It's an easy set up. Glad to hear you got your problem under control. Fuel problems are no fun. I'm just glad I got it fixed before something really messed up.

Fuel boiling will contribuite to dieseling when shut off. Get rid of the fuel vapor, and control the dieseling. Yes, a direct connection.
Glad to hear you got it handled.
