Local metalizer shop broke one bolt ear off my 68 Big Block Exhaust manifold. Can the ear be welded on ?
I'm a little leary of welding cast iron.
Thanks...............Dan68

Cast iron can be welded by a good welder, it has to be preheated first and the proper electrode used.
BTW, what is a metalizer? Joe

Joe,
Metallizing is a high temp aluminum particle spray applied on the cleaned manifold giving it a dull silver finish , mostly I wanted to stop the rusting .
I was wire brushing & hi-temp painting every spring.
It's held up for several years now.....Dan68

I had mine welded about 8 years ago and have had no problems with it. I don't know if the heat from metalizing it will have any effect but it needs to be done by someone that knows what their are doing. When cast iron gets over heated it tends to get brittle.
Good luck

Just take it to a good welding shop and the repair will be fine. My dad used to build a charcoal pit to heat the cast iron, then use cast iron rod and an arc welder to weld in small "stich" welds, allowing the metal to heat and cool evenly. I just take mine to a good shop.

Make sure the welder knows there is an aluminum coating, and grinds it away, or the weld will get contaminated and never stick right. Joe
