have a new engine (rebuilt original) in my 69 vette (10 miles) the carb was professionally rebuilt but the carb is not acting up to standards. on another site i was told that the original intake uses a special 3 part gasket for the carb to perform correctly, if this is correct (the guy says he will make me one for 15 dollars) where can i find this gasket and what makes it so special?
PS the car runs fine - just don't feel the carb is flowing correctly.

Yo Howard, Is that a big or small block ? And I don't know why I'm asking 'cause I've never heard of any such thing, but then I've been out of town. Stock carb ? Holly or Rochester? 2 gaskets and a spacing plate ?( just guessing) It'll be interesting to hear if anyone has any knowledge of such things. Sorry I'm not much help.

Most likely, the gasket you are referring to is an insulator, with a sheet metal, or aluminuminum "shield" placed in between the gasket bond. A lot of early cars needed some kind of heat insulation from the intake manifold to help keep the fuel from percolating inside the carb. They should still be available tho...someone offering to "make" one seems a little fishy to me...
Don't know if that would really have anything to do with how the engine runs, unless the gasket is 1/4 thick or more.
You may be on the right track with suspecting a carb problem, not a gasket issue.

That's a really difficult thing to diagnose, especially on a fresh rebuild, but if all fazes of the carb's operation are functioning (initial acceleration, primary function and then secondary activation ) there's not much left to desire accept possible rejetting. It's difficult to say ( not knowing the full extent of the rebuild ) how much more fuel the engine can use for maximum performance or if the CFM factor is still compatible. Though these Quads are pretty versatile. To bad you don't have access to another carb to switch out for comparison. If you watch the spark plugs color, it should give you a clue as to wether you're running lean or rich. That would be the first thing to look for, if you desire max acceleration and there are no other distinct characteristics of the problem to isolate the issue ( flat spot, sputtering, popping and etc.) Please keep us informed on your progress. Good luck bro.
