Topic: Catalytic Converter hanger at Transmission
in Forum: C3 Fuel, Emission Control, and Exhaust Systems
I just replaced the transmission mount on my 82 because the old one was pretty mushed up. Mushy also is my differential pinion mount bushing set. They go tomorrow when the new one arrives.
I was getting a lot of noise transfer from the driveline and about half is now gone with the new mount. Hopefully the rest will go with the diff mount fix. I got this mess back together and was looking at it when I noticed the bracket that holds the exhaust system at the front of the catalytic converter is bolted against the bottom of the tailshaft - between it and the top of the mount. This is where it was when I got into it. It seems a lot of transmission/driveline noise could be transmitted to the exhaust system thru that. Would it be better to move the bracket to under the transmission mount rubber so it sits on the crossmember? Or maybe that's where it should be and someone in the past moved it. I can't find a diagram or photo of it for this year. Any suggestions?
My '80 has the same thing. With the sidepipes, I don't have that albatross of a catalytic convertor taking up all the real estate on the passenger side but the hangar is still there. I don't know if it was factory or not as my PO spared every expense he could on the car.

Thanks Dennis. I haven't had a chance to look over any other 80-82 setups but it appears that they did it with the hanger between the mount metal and the tailshaft. I guess they assume the exhaust is pretty much isolated and won't pass along much drivetrain noise (wrong). I know that some of the exhaust noise is transmitted the other way tho If I had sidepipes like you, I wouldn't have to worry about the other noises the car makes. Nice looking setup!

I don't think you could put it down under the mount to start with, but if you did, the heat from the cat. conv. would damge the rubber in the mount.

Turn the stereo up, and drive!

Joel,
You're probably right about the heat, tho the crossmember is a pretty good heatsink - probably better than the tranny.
Best idea yet is to drive. And we DO drive this one. We will also be driving another one, since I just picked up a 93 Aqua w/white interior with 27K on it and never rained on. That'll be in Addition to our favorite C3 I was looking for an autocross car and all I found around here was junk or pristine. Decided to pick up this pristine, and keep looking for something in between for autocross. Runnin' out of room..........
