Hey guys. As you know I have a '77. I ahve a big question. As you know all cars from 1977 and up must have cats.... I had a cat, emmissions pump, and an EGR valve. The big question here is do I need to get a cat, or can I leave it off. I live in Nevada, and my car was originally from California. I am a bit confused.

If it were me, and I didn't have to do a smog check I would leave them off.
Just make sure you don't need a smog check. I think your engine will run better without all that crap.

You need to check your state laws. After 25 years, the Federal government essentially doesn't care...your state might. In Maryland where I live, a car over twenty-five years old can be registered as "historic" and exempt from emissions testing, plus the registration fees are much less. The downside is one is restricted how much he can drive the car...essentially pleasure driving, shows, cruise-in, parades and such.
When I registered my '78 as "Historic", I removed the cat and installed a true dual exhaust system. It ran much better. After I removed the EGR stuff, it ran even better.
If your state allows it...make the change.

I checked ont eh DMV's website and it says that cars form 1968 through 1974 don't ahve to have cats. I have a 1977, I guess I'm screwed. But then again I amy not be. The car already got titles, and since I took some of it apart, I rendered the car non-driving. So they sent a DMV tech I guess you want to call him that. He inspected the car, he looked underneat I guees to see if there was a cat, at this time there was I didn't take the cat off the exhaust system. He passed the car as an OK so Ic an go get it titled. but the website says taht during registration there will ahve to be a visual insection for this. What do I do? I don't ahve money for a cat, I threw my old one away. If I don't ahve money for a regular cat, I certainly don't have one for a high-flow cat. Needless to say I don't wnat a cat, how cna I get around this?
Thanks guys...
p.s take a look at these rediculous standards:

go to the section: IX EMISSION

well.. ive hollowed them out before..
you may want to get another from a junk yard so you can have dual hollow cats.. they pass a visual inspection but not an emission test..

If you pay the shipping, it is kinda heavy, I think I have one off a 78 in the shop (it's in good shape). Let me know. and do you want it UPS, US MAIL, OR fedx. i'm in south mississippi. 50 years from now we may still question what a smog check is.
