My '71 LT-1 (Holley 4801) always smells like a gas leak, yet I can't pin-point the problem. The smell seems to be strongest around the carb, but not always. Sometimes, after I have driven the car, the smell is strongest under the rear end. I have checked the level of gas in the float bowls, and it is right at the bottom of the hole. I've looked through some of the past posts and could find nothing that would specifically answer my question. Anyone have a similar problem and found a solution? My next step is to rebuild the carb; maybe the gaskets are shot. Any rebuild kits I should avoid?

iF YOU ARE GOING TO REBUILD THE CARB, GO WITH A HOLLEY KIT. NOTHING BEATS ORIGINAL PARTS. DOES YOUR CAR HAVE THE CHARCOAL CANNISTER? IT COULD BE THE CAUSE OF YOUR SMELL. THERE IS A THREAD (SOMEWHERE IN HERE) DEALING WITH THAT.

BY THE WAY, ARE YOU GOING TO SIGN UP FOR CRUISE FOR THE CURE IN SEPTEMBER? WE NEED MORE SO CAL GUYS TO SHOW UP....SEE THE THREAD FOR POSTED IN THE LAST 24 HOURS.

A holley Fast kit should work well with the rebuild.

One thing Iwould look for are are spilt dried gas/dirt ring on the intake manifold.  Sometimes you will develop a pin hole in the pump diagragms and when you apply pressure some fuel will leak out of the covers and dribble on to the intake.  I'm hoping you know what I am talking about when I say pump diagragms those are the 1" by 1" square things on the bottoms of each fuel bowl.

On anther note there are any number of things that can cause strong gas fumes.  Worn engine with lots of blow by, leaky exhaust gaskets, emission components not working correctly, Choke not coming all the way open, improper carb tuning are just a few that come to mind.

Thanks to all for the responses so far. It looks like I have a lot of sleuthing to do. I think I will start with the Holley rebuild kit and go from there.

By the way - I WILL be at the Cruzin' for A Cure in September. I'll see you SoCal "Wild Bunch" guys in Costa Mesa!

When you check the fuel line on the right and the two EEC lines on the left at the rear of car go the extra mile and pull the little black box called the seperator and check it. its made of plastic and they crack where they a bonded together or where the hoses go on, it is a check valve to keep fuel from filling your charcoal cannister when your gas tank is full. with a little "feel" a mirror, and some patience you can get it off and on without pulling the tank.

I had a similar smelly problem on my '74. Always had a raw fuel smell when I was around it, especially while driving with the winders down. Took me about six months (I don't get out much!) to find the problem, and it turned out to be a leak in the fuel tank . I pulled the tank and epoxied (JB Weld)it, to buy some time, and the smell went away until the epoxy gave up the ghost. A new tank from Quanta fixed it for good, but all of the hoses to & from the tank were dry-rotted & cracked, so they were replaced at the same time.

Check that plastic splash box back on the gas tank.  Mine had a crack and always smelled like gas.  By the way, you could just start burning race fuel and it would smell very nice.

My gas smell was due to a blocked overflow line at the fill spout on my 74.
