What is the correct fuel pressure for a 383 stroker engine with Holley 650 street avenger carb? I've got a holley electric fuel pump at the tank on my '69 and an in-line fuel guage installed up at the inlet to the carb.

Pressure at the carb should be 7 to 7.5 PSI. It is possible to run as much pressure as 9 psi. Some racers will run this much pressure so the needle comes up off the seat with just a slight tip of the throttle. I would not do this on the street.

Depending on what electric holley fuel pump you have depends on whether your going to need a fuel pressure regulator. Red pump usually does not require a regulator on a holley carb. If its a Q-jet, carter or Edelbrock you will need a regulator, because they can only handle 5 psi at the needle and seat.

If its a blue, black or volumax elec pump you will need a regulator. No getting around it with these pumps.

I would also recommend using their fuel pump relay kit so the pump has correct voltage all the time. If you can't afford this kit, then email them and ask for a relay diagram so you can wire up the pump properly. I've seen many of these pumps not perform correctly or fail because of improper current (too much or too little) to the pump. Make sure the base fuel inlet of the pump is below the mid level point of the tank. If at all possible make it even with the bottom of the tank.

Hope this info helps.

Thanks. Looks like I've got a blue Holley fuel pump. There's an inline fuel pressure guage mounted near the carb. I'll read it this weekend while the engine is idling. There's a big silver braided fuel line (not sure if that's good or not, why use braided fuel line?) that goes from the tank up to a T or L shaped metal fitting that's mounted to the side of the engine compartment and then over to a metal can shaped fuel filter, then to the fuel pressure guage and then to the carb. Maybe the T/L fitting is a regulator of some sort?

I'd have to see a picture of it, but is sounds like the regulator. Most of them have a line in and a line out plus there will be a nut on top with a allen wrench adjustment to change the fuel pressure. Why Braid? Its the easiest way to connect these three items together when you get away from a stock setup. Its also far superior to rubber style hoses.
