Vette(s): Black,1981 t-top
Hi All,
I recently took my '81 vette(completely stock)to my local muffler shop. I told the owner I wanted "true duals" complete with 2 new converters and 2 flowmasters. When I went to pick it up, he had routed both sides to a single "free flow racing converter", and on to the flowmasters. He said he didn't know if the car had a heat shield on both sides, and that this was just as good. He said if I wasn't happy with it, he would change it at no charge, but that if it was his, this is how he would do it. My question is,is this just as good, or did I get ripped off? Should I have it changed and add another converter?

Thanks,
Darrell

From a pure dollars standpoint I can't say whether or not you got ripped, but from a trust and confidence standpoint I'd say you did. When you left the shop you were expecting to get a system installed that you had requested. But by installing something else AND not consulting you about it, I'd say the guy can't be trusted.

I'm sure there are some exhaust experts out there that will be able to tell you if you got robbed of any performance by the system that was installed. What diameter are the pipes, brand of the single converter, etc.? Any details you can provide about the system you requested and the system that was installed will help the guys (and gals) figure out if there is any negative impact on the performance.

I think the newer C3's didn't have holes in the crossmember for drivers side exhaust, so any dual exhaust would have to cross over to the pass side anyway (or hang down and hit the ground). One High-Flow converter will probably do the job with the larger pipes. Does it run better than before? Joe
PS from a legal standpoint, shops aren't allowed to change the converter setup (single to dual) - even if it improves emissions.

you think the shop would have at least called you and told you what they were going to do before they did the work. |hammer|
