i am considering replacing the rochester qjet carb with an edelbrock 1400 on my 77 vette; however, it requires an adapter plate. i am worry that with the added plate, the hood will not close....has anyone done something similar and can tell me definitely yes before i start this project? thanks in advance! |cheers|

I have a 1405 on a performer intake and no problems, but no adapter either.

You'll need a few other pieces as well...an idle kick-up solenoid if you have a/c (the stock GM one won't fit), changes to the fuel line and an in-line fuel filter and make some adjustments to the linkage, but none of this is major. Make sure you have all the extra pieces before starting. Edelbrock makes the solenoid and a fuel line just for it that goes from the fuel pump to the carb with a fuel filter already installed, or you can simply cut and flare your existing line and install an in-line filter.

While I think the Q-jet is an excellent carburetor, I've used an Edelbrock carb on a different car and was well satisfied with it. You'll like it as well...it's simple, reliable, easy to adjust and holds its adjustments.

thanks for the tips gunslinger! i'll make sure to have all of the parts on hand before starting the job. i am glad to hear that you have had a good experience with your edelbrock carb and can't wait to see how it works on the vette. this is going to be a fun weekend...in addition to installing the new carb, i am also going to replace the steering gear box. the rebuilt box came today...it looks great!

again, thanks for the advices!!

Something to consider...since you're using an Edelbrock square bore carburetor, I would suggest getting an Edelbrock Performer EPS intake manifold. You won't need an adapter plate and that intake is designed strictly for use with a square bore carb and optimized for it. Their specs say it pulls more horsepower and torque numbers over their standard Performer intake that uses either square or spread-bore carbs. I have a standard Performer intake on my '78 with it's original Q-jet and I'm happy with the combination. You should be real happy with the EPS intake and 1400 carburetor.
