Guys,
I have a a quick question have any of you removed the emmisions gear off your engine? If you have what was involved? I hope this is not a dumb question.
No dumb questions here.
I had most of my stuff removed by the previous owner so I can't say how hard it is to do. As long as your state allows it, I would do it.
Massachusetts where I live doesn't check the emmissions after the car is 25 years old or older. So I don't have to worry.
L48, 4 Speed, Dual Exhaust

I've had no problem with those parts missing...in fact the car runs much better. Of course, you have to stay within your state's laws regarding making such changes. Here in Maryland, when a car's over 25 years old and you register it as historic, it no longer is required to undergo periodic emissions testing.
On newer cars, removing the EGR or any emissions equipment can cause a lot of problems. In most cases our C3s will run better. See my answer in the "EGR Valve" thread. Any car with a computer will be affected a lot more than non-computer cars. Our C3s start computer control in 1981.
The AIR (Air Injecton Reactor) pump system is purely emissions control and has NO affect on the way the car runs when warmed up. It has no affect on the way it runs cold, but it will help it warm up a bit faster. If you can handle a few minutes longer warm up, there is no driveability factor involved with removing AIR system.
Removing the EFE (Early Fuel Evaproation) valve, also know as the vacuum controlled heat riser, will affect the driveability during warm up. But readjusting the choke will compensate and the car can run fine during warm up. But again, it will take a couple extra minutes to warm up.
Once engine modifications are made, there are major differences, and most performance modified engines will run better without the emisisons equipment.
Just be carefull of emission laws in your area.
