as some of you may have read i was thinking of going with true dual exhaust on my 81. But over the weekend i heard a corvette with side pipes that had a sound that i had never heard before. i loved it. that changed my mind about what to do with exaust.
I don't know if there is a special catalytic converter u can get to put in the side pipes to make the emissions legal. (im in california and emissions are a bitch.)
If there is a way to make side pipes legal, i would totally want to do that, and if not, i have something in mind that is probably really hard to do, and if i didn't love cars as much as i do, i wouldn't want to do this.
Is it reasonable/possible to have true dual exhaust comming out the back that was completely emissions legal, and then side pipes hooked up to the headers, or right after the hearders, that are capped, but if i wanted to, i could cap the pipes comming out of the back, and uncap the sidepipes. i've been trying to figure out a way to pass emissions, and still have side pipes. i have heddman headers now that i haven't put on yet, and will appreciate any comment and ideas on what to do.
thanks

True duals from headers with two cats work well. Tap into the collector with what is called, lakes pipes. Depending on where your collector is, you may need a double "U" shaped pipe. If you use shorty headers no double "U" pipe will be needed. And don't forget to uncap them when you drive. Luck.

It IS possible to get cats into sidepipes. The new Mercedes-Benz supercar(SLR) has sidepipes that come out in front of the doors and it is 50state+Euro emissions legal now. How they do it and if you can get it done for a Corvette is totally unknown. However. They do exist.

Since you live in the "Republic of Kalifornia" I refuse to place a bet on your "luck" to go the side pipe route...
The CARB regulations in your "state" are something I am honestly very very thankful that I do not have to deal with...
