I have a 82 CE and the check engine keep coming on. Upon some research, I was able to determine that the o2 sensor was bad. Replace it and still getting the same error. Check the wiring from the o2 to the eco and did not find anything wrong. Don’t know where to go from here.
I have the '82 FSM and can send you the diagnostic steps for the code if you would like(tomorrow). A problem with a vacuum leak, or the EGR valve can set code 44. A bad connection at the ECM is also a possibility.

Have replaced egr and the o2 sensor several years ago and check the wiring from the o2 sensor and the eco. Everything check out just fine. Just wonder if the smog system could be cause me problems. Notice that one of the check valves was rusted through. I know the smog system is connected to the egr.
The diagram would be great help to me.
I sent you an email on Feb 28th with the info. Did you not get it?
I'll try to load it here...
