Exhaust Band Clamps

Has anyone used the wide stainless band clamps on their exhaust system? I have a set from Jegs that are stepped to match both the head pipe and intermediate pipe dimensions. My question is whether these clamps can be used to secure the two pieces if they are just butted together rather than inserted one in the other. After struggling for a while to assemble my new system, this possibility is looking attractive, if it would work.

We are actually starting to use some of these new wide band clamps on some of hookers new systems.  They seem to work really well and are much more attractive.

My dual 2 1/2" exhaust was welded all the way back , so when I put the TKO 600 in I had to cut the pipes after the crossmember to get the transmission out & in. I used those clamps & they seem to work fine....sure makes it easier to pull the trans now. Almost forgot my pipes are not quite butted together & they hold like weld.

Thanks, guys. I just gave it a try. Alan, did you have to tighten the clamps really extra tight to get them to seal well? I tightened mine pretty tight and can still rotate the joint a little bit. Don't know if it would leak or not--I plan to fire it up for the first time in 15 years sometime in the next few days (after complete rebuild of everthing north of the firewall). What I did was put the joint together as well as possible (about half as deep as it needed to be). Maybe I should just cut the headpipe a couple inches and butt them up?

I tightened mine very tight & they don't leak.

The very nice thing about the band clamps is once removed the pipes come apart very easily.  No indentations to  make thing difficult.  Very nice.  They should tighten down without movement to hold everything in place.
