Hi all!
I need to replace the exhaust on my '76 L-48, & am thinking of putting a set of headers on there, & different mufflers, as I want a little more ommph, & be able to hear a nice sound. Right now, the existing pipes are getting a few small holes, so I'll be replacing the pipes from the front to the back. Any suggestions on a header that will fit without any major modification, and a muffler that will give a nice sound?
Thanks!

Considered sidepipes? The Hookers look great, and with the "turbo" style mufflers, the are pretty quiet at idle and sound very thoaty without being obnoxious when driving. With A/C you may need a spacer for mounting bracket(A/C long removed from mine by a previous owner). The downside is that they are about $1300-$1400 dollars. If you look around you can probably find a used set in VGC for much less.
Factory style sidepies are supposed to sound good, increase performance, and you use stock exhaust manifolds. You can get fiberglass covers that look good, cheap.

Just a couple of thoughts..... |idea|

If you want a really throaty sound, try Flowmaster 40's. You can go to their website and listen to them at http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/web10/indexf5.html

That's really cool that they have sound bites on the site! Makes me want one for my own Vette! Seems pretty pricey though.

I got mine from Jegs. Only about $79 per muffler, and installed them myself. Not too bad |wink|

Jp42vette,
I think Hooker header sidepipes would look really sweet on your car. I never thought about getting them either when I switched to true dual exhaust with Flowmaster 40s a couple years ago. The Flowmasters are definitely amazing though. They did make my L-48 feel stronger and it was much cheaper then getting the sidepipes. I couldn't stop smiling after I pulled away from the shop after the installation. I don't have headers on it, but I've been wishing for a set and would probably go with dynomax. I heard they go on pretty easily, hold up well, and they are only around $220. I don't know if I'll get them though because when I graduate in a year I'm probably going to switch to the Hooker header sidepipes. If you don't want to spend the money though... the Flowmaster 40s are great mufflers. I ended up putting one on my truck too and it really sounded great.
