I know this is all speculative, but what is the best sounding exhaust set up out there.  I need some opinions so let 'em roll.

Is it loud when you get on it, or just loud all the time?

Do a search on "exhaust" and "sound" and you will find lots of opinions.

If you think you want loud all the time, ride with someone who has it for an hour straight before you install them.
You might change your mind.

I guess what I'm looking for is something that sounds mean but isn't annoying, maybe a growl as apposed to a bite.

I have headers, duals and stock style mufflers on my black79. Sounds great, not loud but you still know there's something under the hood, as does the guy next to ya at the stoplight! On my white79, I simply replaced the cat with a test pipe. Rest is all factory. Sounds almost as good as the black one. I don't like a LOT of noise, I like to let the Vette just stand out on its own. Not by how noisy it is.

Vette(s): 1971 Blue Roadster, sb400, cam, electronic ignition,10 disc CD changer, 2.5" chambered exhaust, 3.36 rear, tremec 5 speed from Classic Chevy, fiberglass rear spring and vintage air.
I had a 69 coup with hooker side pipes so the chambered don't sound that loud to me. Wouldn't change for anything!
