In preparation for the C3X, I figure that nows a good time to get a set of quieter mufflers. So I head down to a highly recommended muffler shop and see a fellow by the name of Jason. This guy's motto is..if it can possible be done, I can do it. I figure ok cool. Up on the lift it goes, and we start discussing whether the existing pipes can be saved or not. The last person that tweaked the pipes didn't do a great job. So we scrapped a stainless system. Now for mufflers. They came up with a set of stainless ones made by some dude in Canada. So I said give me a price for all this. Well the manager comes flying in with a catalytic converter. I asked him what the H$ll is that for. Oh you gotta have them on the car. I argued for awhile about how he can't by law remove them, but if the car came in without, he's not breaking the law, and this car is going to fall under an emission exemption when it hits 25 yrs old. So needless to say I was stuck in a bind. So I now have S/S true duals again with twin cats and S/S mufflers. The Canadian ones wouldn't fit. So we went with ones that look and sound similar to Flowmasters. They were more but I wasn't paying the difference. Top notch work, and a top notch price..$1067

I cant win lately. Oh and the mufflers are pretty close to what I wanted for sound.

Sarge, it was loud, but I liked it the way it was. Although it would be more pleasent cruising with the quiter system. Sounds like you may have gotten stuffed with the converters. But the law can vary a bit from one area to another.
Here in Ohio, if you are working past the converter, you don't need to repair/restore it. But if you are working at or in front of the converter, it need to be there, and working. Over 25 it no longer matters anywhere I know of except California. Mine is 29 years, so no problem.

this varies state by state... but i dont it is legal for a muffler shop to pull any cat without replacing it.
they may not have to replace it.. but I dont think they can remove it.
but there is no way to prove that someone didnt jack your car up and cut your cat out with a reciprocating saw to salvage the platinum if you know what I mean

Hank, yes, once over (not at) 25 years old, you can legally remove the cat here in Ohio, and in most states. 79 plus 25 is 04. Wait until January.
