Topic: Fuel gauge
in Forum: C3 Fuel, Emission Control, and Exhaust Systems
Hey guys, I need some advise. I just noticed that my fuel gauge reading is way off, this started right after I replaced my fuel pump (it took a dump). I can't see any reason that I know of, that replacing my pump would cause this problem. The needle goes well past the full mark (3 o'clock on the gauge). I'm thinking it's the sending unit. How difficult is the work involved ?
Thanks for your help.

If you need to remove the sender, drain as much fuel as you can from the tank. Disconnect the batt., take the spare tire down & take the upper cover off, then remove the ground & fuel gauge signal wires from the sender unit. Remove the fuel line(rubber hose). The sender is held into the tank with a "retaining ring", which turns c-clockwise to remove. You'll see three 'tabs' sticking up from the ring. Use a brass punch, or a block of wood with a small hammer to turn the ring c-clockwise.(you don't want to create any sparks!) The sender will come out with a little creative twisting. Make sure you have a drain pan under the tank to catch any fuel left in it.
Now you can replace the unit in reverse of removing it.

Thanks Joel, I'll run the tank as close to empty as possible, and follow your instructions. It will be a few weeks before I tackle the job. I'll let you know how I made out.
