I have been shopping for lines and cleaning up the tank and noticed there are three fuel lines.  I know one goes to the front fender for the charcol canister, and another is obviously a supply off of the sender.  What is the third for?

I always though that you only needed a return line for fuel injection, at least thats what ive heard and experienced with aircraft engines

Nope. Look at your fuel pump. There will be the metal line going to the carb., one rubber hose from the tank(3/8"), and a smaller one as a return(5/16").

The return line is there to keep the fuel circulating back from the front of the car to the rear.  Not for performance etc, but to help cool the fuel and prevent vapor lock.   Fuel moving slowly in the lined can heat up from the exhaust and engine heat, and boil.  The return line can also return any vapor to the tank instead of going to the carb.
