I am finally getting to the task of changing the fuel pump on my 76. I followed the directions in my Chiltons Manual but, having a bit of a problem. I can't seem to get the new fuel pump to go in and line up straight to bolt it on. It seems like the actuator inside the block is sticking down a bit to far to allow me to get the pump arm that goes into the block under the actuator and allow the pump to line up right. I used a 3/8 x 16 x 2" bolt and threaded it in from the front before removing the old pump like the instructions said. ""Is it possible that the actuator was in a down possition and needs moved up manually or something and then resnugged with the bolt in front again??? Or do I just have to fit it in the hole and force it against the block with the bolts that hold it in place?? I don't want to screw something up here.

yes it is possible, try losening the bolt and lifting up the shaft-if it moves retighten the bolt if not try turning the engine a bit to get the cam lobe up then try again to raise the pump shaft up then re tighten the bolt.

Thanks for the responce I will try that. I didn't want to mess with it if I was gonna get things out wack more than they are. I'll give it a try. If I need to turn the engine I guess I can just put the key in and bump the engine over a sec. to see if that does it.
You are better off turning the engine by hand. If you bump it you may go past the low spot on the lobe. The high spot pushes the acuator or push rod down to the pump. Rotate the engine and hold the push rod up. When it tops out and starts to move back down, stop rotating the engine, and retighten the retaining bolt. The fuel pump will go right in.

Ken, I don't want to sound like a dumby here, but, I am. How do I turn the engine by hand? Never did that before.
Vincent, put I believe a 5/8 socket on the bolt holding on the harmonic balancer (behind crankshaft pulley) and turn it clockwise.

Hey guys, thanks for the help and the info on this fuel pump replacement. I am mechanically inclined but, never did this before and never had to turn the engine by hand like this. It was a good learning experience and one that didn't cost me an arm and a leg to learn.
I have found with the C3 it's always better to ask first and dive in later.
Fuel pump in and everything is put back together. More importantly, It RUNS and NO Leaks!!!!
