I need to replace the fuel tank sending unit.  There is a tool that Zip Products sells.  However, is there another way to remove the cam locking unit so I don't have to buy the tool and use it once?

You can use a large-ish screwdriver and a hammer, if you're careful. Just tap the locking ring around until it is lined up with the open slots. Be mindful of any fuel vapors, tho...a spark could make it quite interesting.

Thanks for the info. I will have the tank empty and dry before I do any work. I just don't want to buy the tool and only use it once the rest of my time.

IF you have a brass drift pin, use that.  It won't spark.
