Hey all,
Got a little problem with my gas gauge on the 69. It has always worked fine until a few weeks ago. I noticed it went from full down to half a tank, then back up to full again. Now the only time it will work at all is when I first turn the key on, after I start the engine it will very slowly go all the back to empty and stay there.
I sure hope I don't have to pull the tank.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Ken

Pull the connector off of the sending unit and ground it. The gauge should go to 'full'(with the key on). If it doesn't, then you have a problem with the gauge or the wiring. If it goes to 'full' and stays there, you have verified that the gauge & wiring are OK, and that the problem is the sending unit in the tank. I'm not real familiar with the gauges, but some of them have a resitor bar on the backs of them, between the two terminals. It's possible, if your gauge has one, that the resistor is taking a dump. Hope this is of some use!

Thanks,
it's a place to start. Can I get to the sending unit?
I have never even looked for it.

It's on the bottom of the fuel tank. You might have to drop the spare down to get to it. Just look for where the fuel line goes in, and you'll see two wires; one is a ground (usually black), toward the outer edge of the sender, and the other is the feed to the gauge. It should be closer to the center of the sender, and that's the one you want to remove and ground to check the gauge & wiring. It's possible, also, that the ground wire on the sender is causing the trouble. You can put a jumper wire w/alligator clips on it to a good ground to see if that makes a difference.
(If all else fails, a 3ft broomstick will work to check the fuel level!!

Hey I'm a old truck driver and that's all we used to have for a fuel gauge in the old days.
Yeah the good old stick.
thanks
